It still makes a lot of sense for the Baltimore Orioles and Roansy Contreras to reunite…

The Baltimore Orioles have been active this offseason in bolstering their pitching staff, but one move that still makes sense is reuniting with Roansy Contreras. The 24-year-old right-hander, who was recently designated for assignment by the Pittsburgh Pirates, showed promise in his time with Baltimore last year. Given the Orioles’ need for pitching depth and Contreras’ upside, bringing him back could be a low-risk, high-reward move.

Contreras’ Potential and Past Performance

Contreras, once a highly regarded prospect in the New York Yankees’ system, was part of the trade that sent Jameson Taillon to Pittsburgh. He had an impressive 2022 season, posting a 3.79 ERA in 95 innings, but struggled in 2023 with a 6.59 ERA before being demoted. His fastball velocity dipped, and his command wavered, but the raw talent remains.

When Contreras spent time with the Orioles’ organization last season after being acquired off waivers, there were signs that Baltimore’s renowned pitching development system could help him turn things around. His stuff—featuring a mid-90s fastball, a sharp slider, and a developing changeup—still profiles well. The Orioles have had success in revamping struggling pitchers, making Contreras an ideal reclamation project.

Why Baltimore Needs Him

Despite acquiring Corbin Burnes in a blockbuster trade, the Orioles still lack rotation depth. Beyond Burnes, Kyle Bradish, and Grayson Rodriguez, there are question marks. John Means is coming off an injury, and Dean Kremer has been inconsistent. Additionally, the bullpen could use more long-relief options, a role Contreras could potentially fill while refining his arsenal.

Given Contreras’ youth and upside, Baltimore would be wise to take another shot at unlocking his potential. If he can regain his 2022 form, he could provide valuable innings as a spot starter or a high-upside reliever.

A Low-Cost, High-Upside Move

The Orioles are in win-now mode but remain financially cautious. Bringing back Contreras would likely require only a minor league deal or a waiver claim, making it an inexpensive gamble. Given their track record with pitchers, Baltimore may be the best place for him to rediscover his form.

Reuniting with Roansy Contreras makes too much sense for the Orioles to ignore. If he bounces back, he could be a key depth piece in their rotation or bullpen. If not, the financial risk is minimal. For a team looking to maximize its talent pool, this is an opportunity worth considering.
