Luka Dončić Opens Up About Father’s Sacrifice in Emotional Interview
In a deeply emotional interview, Luka Dončić, the NBA superstar and Dallas Mavericks’ cornerstone, opened up about the profound impact his father, Saša Dončić, has had on his life and career. During the candid conversation, Luka, often known for his poised demeanor on and off the court, broke down in tears as he reflected on the sacrifices and the unwavering support his father provided throughout his journey to the NBA. The raw emotion displayed in the interview highlighted not only the bond between father and son but also the immense sacrifices Saša made to ensure Luka had the chance to chase his dreams.
Interviewer: Luka, you’ve had a remarkable career at such a young age. Can you talk a little about your father and how he’s played a role in your journey to where you are today?
Luka Dončić: (visibly emotional, wiping away tears) “Yeah, I don’t think I’d be where I am without him. He’s done everything for me. My whole career, everything I’ve accomplished, it’s because of him. He’s sacrificed so much for me, for my dream, and for me to have a better life. I… I can’t really put it into words how much he’s done.”*
Interviewer: It’s clear that you have a very close bond with your father. Can you share more about the sacrifices you’ve seen him make for your success?
Luka Dončić: “It wasn’t easy, you know? We didn’t have a lot growing up. He had to make tough decisions. He moved from Slovenia to Spain with me when I was a little kid, so I could have the best opportunity to play basketball. He left behind everything – his career, his life – just so I could chase my dream. He worked really hard, often taking jobs that were tough, just so I could play the game I love. There were times he didn’t even get to watch me play because he had to work extra hours just to make sure we had everything we needed. I… I will never be able to repay him for what he’s done.”
Interviewer: You mentioned him being away sometimes, not able to watch you play. How did that make you feel as a child?
Luka Dončić: “It was hard, of course. I missed him when he wasn’t there, especially during the games. But I knew why he was doing it, and I always felt his presence even if he wasn’t physically there. We would talk about the games afterward, and he would always give me advice on how to be better. His words still stick with me. He told me, ‘No matter what happens, always give your best. Hard work and sacrifice are the keys.’ And I’ve tried to live by that every day.”
Interviewer: It must have been difficult for him to leave everything behind for you to follow your dreams. Do you think about that often, especially now as you’ve become an NBA star?
Luka Dončić: “I think about it all the time. Sometimes I get emotional because I realize how much he gave up. Not just moving to a different country, but the personal sacrifices. He had to be both my father and my coach, and that’s a heavy responsibility. There are moments, like after a big win or a game where I feel like I’ve done something special, that I think, ‘He’s the reason I’m here.’ I just hope he knows that everything I do, I do it for him and for all those sacrifices he made.”
Interviewer: Luka, you’ve come such a long way, and your journey has inspired so many. How do you keep yourself grounded with all the success and attention you’re receiving?
Luka Dončić: (Pauses, looking down before looking back up, visibly emotional) “I just think of my dad. He’s always told me to stay humble, to never forget where I came from. And it’s easy to forget when you’re in the spotlight all the time, but he always reminds me, ‘It’s not about where you are, it’s about who you are.’ And that’s what keeps me grounded. He’s always been there for me, and now, I just want to make him proud.”*
Interviewer: There’s no doubt that your father is incredibly proud of you. Luka, what would you say to him right now if he were here with you?
Luka Dončić: (voice cracking with emotion) “I’d just say thank you. Thank you for everything. For all the sacrifices, for the love, for always believing in me, even when things were tough. I wouldn’t be here without you. I love you, and I’m so grateful for everything you’ve done for me.”*
As Luka wiped away his tears, it was clear that the bond he shares with his father is the cornerstone of his life, both personally and professionally. In a world where athletes often face immense pressure to succeed, Luka’s raw, emotional reflection serves as a poignant reminder of the people who shape them behind the scenes. For Luka Dončić, his father’s selflessness and support will always be the foundation of his remarkable career.
